PSU: Show and Tell

February 15, 2010

Spending time with Friends of Graphic Design at PSU!
Today, I'm super excited to be spending some time with Kate Bingaman-Burt and Friends of Graphic Design at PSU. Kate curates an on-going lecture series via Skype (or in-person!) with really inspirational creative types called Show and Tell. It's something I definitely wish I had the opportunity to sit in on when I was in college. Regardless, I'm really honored to be talking about being a young designer and Threadless 101 with the students of PSU. Other amazing Show and Tellers include Jessica Hische, Dress Code, Aaron Draplin, Jennifer Daniel and Alissa Walker.

Humble Pied

December 01, 2009

Humble Pied is Launched!
I know for sure I wouldn't be where I am today without the giving help of my friends, peers, mentors and creative directors alike. Originally inspired by a previous AIGA presentation, I was moved by all of my great friends to create a site that follows a simple formula: one inspiring creative type sharing one bit of advice, all over iChat. So with that being said, I'm stoked to share with you Humble Pied! As always, I'd love for you to contribute.

Speaking at Spark 2009: Brand Me!

November 21, 2009

Threadless hearts Spark!
I'm really excited (and honored!) to be speaking at this year's Spark, an AIGA student-run design conference. This year's theme is "Brand Me," so I'll be joining Chicago's revered Jim Lienhart as well as The Pepper Group's President and CEO, Tim Padgett, in talking about the relationship between designers and brands.

AIGA Chicago Poster Series

October 19, 2009

AIGA Chicago Poster Series
AIGA Chicago is a sponsor of the 20th Anniversary Unisource Paper Show coming this October 20th. I was invited to design a poster, along with 19 other Chicago designers, to help commemorate this big event. Paper planes and paper cranes, the things you can do with paper. See all of the contributed poster designs.

Simian Mobile Disco

October 18, 2009

Simian Mobile Disco
Simian Mobile Disco is coming to The Metro in Chicago next month. The Metro asked me to design and screen print something awesome for the show. Since they're a DJ duo performing twice this night, you can rotate the poster to see each DJ with different show listings. Round and round we go.

HOW Top 10 Website

September 08, 2009

HOW Top 10 Websites
Just wanted to drop a big thank you to the crew at HOW Magazine for listing my site as one of the “Top 10 Websites for Designers.” Definitely an honor to be included with the likes of The Aesthetics Department, AdamsMorioka and other total badasses. Be sure to follow HOW on Twitter. Also, thanks again to everyone who came out to The Show 'n Tell Show last night, it was such a blast, and definitely inspiring. Peep the photo Nick Campbell took while the crowd was yawning.

August 29, 2009

Talk-show style design tomfoolery!
September 6th, 2009 / Sunday / Schubas / 3159 N. Southport
Join six super talented creative types and me live on stage on “The Show 'n Tell Show.” This time, hosts Mike Renaud & Zach Dodson are bringing the show to an even bigger venue to accommodate the growing crowd, as we'll be rocking the stage live at Schubas. It's going to be a crazy night of designers and non-designers alike sharing their creative processes, new projects and other general hilarities. Check out the ultra talented people booked, then keep tabs on the show on your Facebook. Oh, and no one works the following Monday. Hoorah!

Interview with Sharpie

July 25, 2009

A fun interview with Sharpie.
I'm a big fan of using Sharpies when I sketch and illustrate. The fine folks at Sharpie caught wind of it, and reached out asking to do an interview. It was fun, and definitely an honor. Check out the interview with Sharpie, and if you're on Twitter (as you should be), be sure to follow @SharpieSusan, who is Sharpie's awesome PR and Social Media manager. Thanks, Susan!

Thoughts & Good News in CMYK Magazine

July 20, 2009

Highlighted in CMYK Magazine.
If you get a chance, be sure to check out the latest issue of CMYK Magazine in your local news stand. They were kind enough to include me in their Advice Feature, “Making a Name For Yourself.” In addition to that, they gave some props in their Good News section for the volunteer work I did with EPIC. Thanks again, CMYK Magazine!

Hello there, skinnyCorp.

July 06, 2009

Joining the skinnyCorp / Threadless crew.
Somehow, I got really lucky and found myself landing a new home with one of the most amazingly creative and talented team of individuals that exists. I'm super stoked to share that I happily joined the skinnyCorp crew as a designer, with a focus on interactive work for Threadless and sister projects. It's a dream job come true, considering more than half of my wardrobe consists of Threadless tees. Take a tour of the office and catch up on why Inc. Magazine puts Threadless as “The Most Innovative Small Company in America.”

Sensory Overload

June 26, 2009

Word It / Here
I've seen Major Taylor spinning at my local Five Star Bar for some time, but it wasn't until we hollered at each other on Twitter that we finally got a chance to work together. He'll be throwing on some killer Monday nights called SENSORY OVERLOAD, be sure to check him and special guests out!

June 24, 2009

A FRESH new poster.
My favorite projects are the ones where I can work with people who are passionate about them. This was just the case. My close friend McCall recently held a screening for FRESH, a movie about the way we think about how our food is (and should be) produced. Together, we worked out a concept for the poster and started to spread the love.

Here with Design Education

June 10, 2009

Word It / Here
It's a bit late, but I got around to doing the Word It for May, “ Here .” It's been a busy month, and I'm excited to share some great news. Hell bent on improving the life of today's design student, I fielded a question regarding design education to industry professionals, instructors and students alike. I've received an overwhelming amount of solid responses, and I'm anxious to hear your response. I'm looking forward to publishing the findings, and quoting you and your words of wisdom!

5 Things We Wish We Knew

May 18, 2009

Flickr / 5 Things
Last Thursday, I was asked to do a presentation at The Art Institute on my experiences and growth in life past art school. I asked my room mate and two best friends to tag along, and we put on a fun presentation for the current students on 5 Things We Wish We Knew Way, Way Earlier. We posted the slides up on Flickr, and we're thankful and humbled to have received a lot of kind words and comments. Special thanks to greyscalegorilla, The Donut Project and all of the tweets in helping us spread the word.

Flow and Ambassador

May 01, 2009

Word It / Flow
Spring, sweets and ice cream. Just finished the April Word It, Flow. It's clear that I've taken a liking to a chocolately and liquidy aesthetic.

In recent news, Scott Hull invited me to be one of the 7 Diplomats for Visual Ambassador. If you're not familiar with Scott Hull, he and his team are one of the leading art and illustration reps, working for clients and agencies such as the NFL, Microsoft, Leo Burnett and DDB. It's definitely an honor to be contributing with 6 other amazing minds.

EPIC and Portugal

April 26, 2009

Poster / Buraka Som Sistema
Hot talent from Portugal and Philly are flying into Chicago for a night at Sonotheque. Black Holes, a solid duo who spin tight music and make even tighter music, asked me to do the poster. Mmm, fresh baked beats.

Have you heard of EPIC? They're an organization that pairs Chicago's top creative professionals with nonprofit clients whose missions focus on education, children and families. I'm stoked to have been asked to join the team. Check out the roster, there's truly fabulous people on board.

Hell Yeah Dude, Blog Wars

April 14, 2009

Poster / Blog Wars
April showers bring more than May flowers, including a fresh new Blog Wars Poster. Aside from a new poster design, Patrick Algrim of Hell Yeah Dude invited me to take over the ever inspirational "The Collection," where the latest trends in art and design are posted. Visit The Collection often to peep my thoughts on fresh servings of visual goodness.

March 30, 2009

Word It / Transition
March came and went, with a Transition every day in weather. Thanks, UnderConsideration, for another fun Word It. Be sure to check out their new site.

Giggles With Miggles on a Podcast

March 08, 2009

Episode #28 of The Reflex Blue Show
I recently went on an excursion to Omaha to get a taste of their design scene and culture, all while celebrating the 1 year anniversary of 36 Point. If you don't know already, 36 Point is home to the minds of both (killer designers) Donovan Beery and Nate Voss. Together, they feature articles on today's graphic design in addition to their ever-popular "The Reflex Blue Show." Nate and Donovan have interviewed heroes including Debbie Millman, Stefan Bucher and Steven Heller—and for whatever crazy reason, I made it to that list.

Catch the latest episode of The Reflex Blue Show, I had a fun time getting interviewed while I shared my thoughts on social media and strategies as design student. Then, follow 36 Point on Twitter.

typo/graphic posters, and tennis!

February 24, 2009

Layer 4 of Layer Tennis
Last week, I was lucky enough to compete against Fuzzy Gerdes in the first ever Qualifying Layer Tennis match, sponsored by Coudal Partners and Adobe. It was fierce, and I definitely learned that 15 minutes is not a lot of time to execute a design.

And as I've mentioned before, illustration and posters are an area of design I really want to hone in on. With that said, I'm stoked to be included as an emerging talent in typo/graphic posters, a resource for great graphic and typographic posters. Other notable designers included are Neville Brody, Paula Scher and Sagmeister.

New Book, Be Happy.

February 04, 2009

Put On a Happy Face
It's time to put on your happy faces, again. I was just informed that the White Picket packaging design is going to be published next year in an upcoming design book titled "Really Good Package Design: Explained." With that in mind, I continued to work out the illustration muscles and made you a new illustration.

Short, with Upgrades.

January 30, 2009

Word It / Short
This week, I was recently promoted to "Student and Young Professional Liason" for the Society of Typographic Arts, as well as "Social Media Liason" for AIGA National. Sounds like a lot of fun opportunities ahead. Connecting with others—especially younger designers—has always been a passion of mine. And if the Word It overload wasn't enough, Speak Up releases the word for February: Short.

Sorry, I'm Late.

January 27, 2009

Word It / Late
Finally caught up to Speak Up's Word Its since I've started. Appropriately enough, the latest one is Late. Spring, where are you?

Cut&Pasted, New Word It.

January 26, 2009

Word It / Destination
This past weekend, I had the pleasure and honor of being accepted into the Chicago Cut&Paste 2009 try out round, designing against a handful of other top local creatives. I'd go as far as to say, it was bliss. Additionally, there's finally work to see, including an all new Word It, Destination. Hope you're staying warm.

Hello, 2009.

January 12, 2009

Well, it's 2009, and I'm about ready to get back into a deep groove with design. New work will be flooding the portfolio, but in the mean time, you can check out an old sketchbook from 2 years ago, and peep my first ever Field Notes. One thing is for sure, this is the year where things get straight silly, if you can give a jam.

Invading the HOW Conference

May 19, 2008

Join my close Chicago friends and I as we invade the 2008 HOW Design Conference. We're live-blogging all of the sessions, and we're putting our photos on Flickr. We'll also have some video clips of the madness and good times in Bean Town.

Love with Rockport, AIGA & STA

February 07, 2008

Ah, February, the time for getting your loved one sweet gifts. Out of ideas? Check out your closest Border's Bookstore, or click on over to Amazon. Rockport's LogoLounge IV is finally published and on store shelves, in all it's metallic gold glory. I've followed the LogoLounge series since the first book when I started college, so it's an honor to be included with my design heroes.

In some AIGA news, I recently did the AIGA Chicago Student Portfolio Review, which was a fantastic time. Consider it like design-interview speed dating, with a side of chit chat and small talk with the Chicago design community. I documented the event and threw in my thoughts and anecdotes for Richard Zeid, the education chair. You'll see that here shortly! And on an STA note, 2008 brings good fortune as I'm on the board as a Student Liasion with my good friend Keri.
